To jump or not to jump... JUST DO IT!

There are two different kinds of people in this world. Those who cannonball into the water without testing it first and those who have to put their big toe in first and then their foot, slowly followed by the rest of their body. I'd like to think this reflects who you are as a person, but I suppose that's not necessarily the case. For me though, it holds true. I'm proud to say I am a mix of these two kinds of people, but the older I get the more I tend to find myself more closely linked with the latter. Google can really become you're best friend when you have to research every little thing you do before you do it. I was actually told the other day by my father-in-law, "Emily, you really have to stop reading so much." Now obviously he didn't mean that I should stop reading all together, but more or less to let me know that sometimes too much reading about things that don't really matter, can be a hindrance. Sometimes you just have to fly by the seat of your pants or you end up not flying at all.

Now obviously, I don't want to go around living my life throwing all caution to the wind, but occasionally I think it would do some good. My mother has been telling me since Walter was born to stop reading so many mothering books and websites because it keeps you from enjoying your little one to the fullest. My husband and I bought our first home 2 years ago and I have yet to really decorate and paint. It's not because I haven't had a million and one ideas, it's because whenever I come up with something I'm just not sure I like it enough. Well so what if it doesn't turn out how I thought? Another coat of paint can fix it in no time. I like to know exactly what our plans for an evening include, such as, where we are going, what we're doing, who we are doing it with, what time, what we'll do it if doesn't turn out how we wanted it to, etc. Not that these are bad traits per say, but they do keep me from enjoying things fully and living in the moment. So as a promise to myself, I am going to start trying to not plan, re-plan, and review everything before I do it.

Games and Cola

When I send my husband to store by himself, he comes back with as many generic products as possible. And when I say generic I mean... completely generic. Instead of buying pepsi or coke, Justice came home with soda that was simply called COLA. No brand at all, just cola. His reasoning was, "how bad could someone screw up cola?" Well, as it turns out, you can really mess it up.
Although, if we wanted to film a sitcom in our house we could use this can of cola and not have to pay rights to anyone because that's all it says on the can... cola. That's one of my favorite things about sitcoms by the way. And on another note, I want to know who still has their milk in a glass bottle? Why do all the cereal commericals always show a pint of milk in a glass container sitting on the table? That's not real... nobody does that, right? I guess I've just always assumed no one does that, but maybe there are those all-american families out there still doing it like the 50's. Kuddos to you, if you're one of them.

So we had friends over for board games this weekend and it was quite enjoyable. I highly reccomend a game called dicecapades if you enjoy board games. It has a little to offer everyone. You must either do an action (like stack dice on top of one another in a certain time period. I had to do 9 pushups in 30 seconds for one of mine and well, to say the least, justice says I didn't even do 6 real ones.), do something you have to use your brain for (like come up with a sentence that contains all the letters you rolled in 30 seconds. The winning sentence of last night was, Woven cloth goes away sometimes.... which I am aware makes no sense at all.) and lastly, there's trivia. So as you can tell, there's something for everyone. You will definitely laugh if you play this game! So go to the store pick up a generic pack of cola and the game dicecapades and you're in for a rowdy night!

Please note the can of "cola" in the background.

It's okay to color outside the lines!

He climbed into his laundry basket in the closet
and then he got really angry when he couldn't get back out.
That's the same face I get when I tell him he can't
 unroll the toilet paper...
It's amazing how much can change in 14 short months (although sometimes days feel like years). The significance of 14 months is that it's the age of my sweet baby boy! Slowly, but surely I am coming to the realization that I can't make him do anything he doesn't really want to. I am a planner, so before he came, I had a very specific idea of what kind of mother I was going to be and exactly what things I was going to do to ensure that things went my way. Obviously, I have now realized babies can't be made to fit into a box. My child is stubborn, in the cutest way possible, of course! (and I have no idea where he gets it from...) He's convinced unraveling the toilet paper roll is the most hilarious thing in the whole world, however, it makes me want to unravel at the seams after he's done it 6,798 times in one day. He won't eat unless he has something he can throw from his high chair and then watch mommy pick it up, until she's blue in the face from trying to explain to him that this isn't how meal time works. So what I am really getting at here is that, every day is a new day to give it another go and that I don't need to worry so much about trying to accomplish everything in one day. And everyday is a new day to teach him something new or read him a new book. Each day can be made into whatever you want it to be. If you don't like how today is going, just remember that when you wake up tomorrow you can start fresh. I love this about motherhood! My child makes me smile from ear to ear when he wakes up in the morning and says "BALL!" I'm not kidding you, Walter wakes up every morning with one thing on his mind, he has to get to his toys, get his ball and start playing. If he can wake up with a clean slate every morning and do whatever he wants, why can't I? There isn't any reason I can't. Here's to always growing and changing, until you're where you want to be! :)

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Hello! Okay, so I am going to try to start writing a blog. I'm not quite sure what it'll be about or if I can even really do this. I enjoy reading other people's blogs and I really like to write, so I thought, "hey, why not?" I don't know where to begin, but I thought a nice generic post might get the thoughts flowing or at least take the edge off of my whole first post anxiety. Well, tomorrow is a new day and maybe I'll have something better to write about! Here's to trying...
